Should You Be Tested For Hepatitis C ?

Not everyone needs to be tested for Hepatitis C. But you should be tested if you can answer “yes” to any questions on this list.

These are not the only ways to contract the virus, so if you feel like there is ANY another reason you should be tested, talk to your health care provider.

Yes No Have you ever …
Injected IV drugs, even once, since 1970?
Had a blood transfusion before 1992?
Had street or prison tattoos or piercings?
Been given clotting factor (something to help your blood clot) since 1987?
Been on kidney dialysis for an extended period?
Injected IV drugs, even once, since 1970?
Been told by a medical provider that you have evidence of liver disease?
Been exposed to HCV on the job (health care)?
Shared a straw to snort cocaine?
Been in the military?
Had multiple sexual partners?
Had sex involving blood or torn skin/ body tissue?
Shared a razor or toothbrush with someone who was infected with the Hepatitis C virus?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions,
get tested for hepatitis C as soon as possible.

Free HCV screening is available to Durham County residents at the Durham County Health Department, and at the Person County Health Department.

If you do test positive for the Hepatitis C virus, you will need a follow-up test to see if the virus is still active in your blood (a chronic, or ongoing infection), or whether you have resolved the infection on your own (if you had an acute infection that did not go on to become chronic).
