The NC Hepatitis C and HIV Symposium 2006

2006 SYMPOSIUM OVERVIEW

Overview

The NC Symposium on Hepatitis C and HIV was a conference co-sponsored by PHICAS, Piedmont Health Care Consortium, the Center for Health Policy’s Health Inequalities Program (HIP), and the NC Department of Health and Human Services’ (NC DHHS) Hepatitis C Program and STD/HIV Prevention and Care Branch. In addition to the above-listed sponsors, the medical symposium was also sponsored by Wake Forest University Medical Center.

Both events were housed at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center in Durham, NC. The community symposium “Helping Heal Our Community” was geared toward community health providers. It was a one-and-one-half day event and was held on Thursday, March 30 to Friday, March 31, 2006. The medical symposium “Effectively Treating an Epidemic” was geared toward clinical healthcare providers. It was a one day event and was held on Friday, March 31, 2006.

Initially, the symposium was planned as only one event offering two tracks—community and medical tracks. With both tracks, we intended to offer registration, hotel, and travel scholarships to community based organization and health department staff to enhance their ability to attend. In December, when we received CME credit approval from the Northwest AHEC at Wake Forest University Medical Center, we learned that we were unable to offer scholarships of any kind to a CME-approved event. This meant the community track would be subject to these stipulations as well as the medical track. Due to this fact, we decided to create two separate events so that scholarships could be offered, though both took place at the same venue and overlapped by one day.
